The 22nd Annual Island 22 Horse Trials
Presented by Western Tree Services
September 5-7 2009
We have been in an almost drought for months and it finally really rains at our event. Sigh.
And we were worried about dust the week before.
Rule ? be careful what you complain about!
But in reality we can not complain too much ? it rained mostly at night. Not great for the campers but horse people always come prepared. We are a hardy lot.
Everyone arrived on Friday to the most beautiful weather. Setting up in the sun definitely makes things nicer.
Many people were shocked at all the upgrades to the park ? the new road in front of the paddocks went over very well. The new riding ring up front got finished just in time and was well used. Everyone was very impressed with the new footing in the main rings.
Friday went very smoothly.
Then the rain started around 4 in the morning on Saturday and the first couple of horses to go Saturday morning got stuck riding in the rain ? but then it stopped and Saturday turned into a perfect horse riding day. No real sun, but no rain and the weather was quite comfortable.
There were some lovely dressage tests and the new footing in the rings dazzled us organizers and we were all smiles.
It rained again Saturday night but stopped again on Sunday and through most of the cross country day there was no rain. We had the odd sprinkle but nothing major. Due to the ground being so dry for so long the earth soaked up the rain that did fall and there were no puddles anywhere. No real slippery spots but I was very proud of all our riders who all road very smart out there and there were no slips that I knew of.
We had a couple of falls on cross country day but they were all the kind that the rider comes off and goes, ?well that was embarrassing.? We like those kind, no one gets hurt.
The combination for Training and Preliminary out of the water was great fun to watch and only TWO preliminary riders successfully did the combo line over Glen?s gulp and Larry?s Leap!!
I can?t wait for the official photographer photos to be posted because she was literally sitting right in front of the water jump for Training and Prelim and her photos are going to be just wild!!
Sunday night BBQ was a blast even with some drizzle. We have some amazing dancing kids out there!!! They were a twisting and a shouting it up!! And even Lynn in her cast was out there jiving away. What a blast!!!!
It rained again on Sunday evening but again on Monday we had amazing weather!! Horse people can not ask for more perfect weather on a jumping day.
Dale Irwin?s course continued to dazzle riders and horses and there was TONS of movement and shocking surprises in the placings. What a fun day!
The weather lasted just long enough to finish the event and then it rained.
But we are proud to say that not one trailer (that we are aware of) got stuck in the camp ground. That new road just ROCKS!!
Clean up was cold and wet and honestly we did not finish on Monday like we usually do because our energy level gave out in all that rain. Our three guys went in the lovely sunshine that appeared on Tuesday to finish up.
Overall it was an amazing event and we had a lot of fun.
Thank you to every competitor, their spouses or parents and support group out there!! Thank you to every volunteer who makes this event happen. And thank you to the weather gods for helping us out during the day!!
See you all next year!!
