The Island 22 Equestrian Park Society does not offer horses for lessons but we do occasionally sponsor clinics for learning purposes. You can check out our List of Events page for any clinics that may be offered at the park.
If you do want to learn how to ride The Society stresses that safety is your number one concern, whether you are a child or an adult.
If you are under the age of 20 and interested in English riding we strongly recommend that you check out your local Pony Club. You dont necessarily need to own a horse to be a part of Pony Club - most clubs have access to lesson horses. Pony club is an excellent way to learn all the ins and outs of looking after a horse and the realities of the costs involved. Pony club stresses safety as first and foremost and offers an Internationally recognized level of testing. Check our links page for a list of Pony Clubs in your area.
If you are a little older than 20 or Pony club is not something that interests you, Equine Canada offers a "Learn to Ride" program that can point you in the right direction for learning. This is offered in English Riding, Western Riding and in Driving.
In British Columbia we have "Horse Council BC". The Society strongly recommends that you join HCBC once you wish to start riding. They are a never ending resource for all the horse disciplines in this Province plus joining gives you a very good insurance coverage.
For those that are interested in Western Riding the HCBC has joined together with Quebec and created the P'tit Trot program. This is a lovely kids program that works them through the levels and has a cute interactive website that can help any child of any riding discipline.
We also recommend using a certified coach as your riding instructor. A certified coach will have proper insurance and will have been properly tested to be allowed to teach. The Horse Council BC has a full list of all coaches in good standing on their website that covers all areas of the province.
And the most important thing is to remember to have lots and lots of fun out there!!
